Flowood unveils its first official city flag

History was made as a new symbol began flying over Flowood City Hall today. In May of 2026, the City of Flowood took a historic step in establishing a lasting visual symbol for the community through the creation and adoption of its first official municipal flag.

Under the leadership of Mayor Kathy Smith, the city launched a student design competition inviting art students from Hartfield Academy, Jackson Preparatory School, and Northwest Rankin High School to participate.

The winning design, created by Northwest Rankin High sophomore Rodgers Brown, was officially selected and adopted during the May Board of Aldermen meeting. In recognition of his achievement, Rodgers received a $1,000 scholarship from the City of Flowood, while his art teacher, Ms. Mandy Brownlee, received a $200 art supply donation from Pacesetter Gallery in support of arts education.

On May 18, 2026, Flowood leadership and staff joined Rodgers Brown, Ms. Mandy Brownlee, and their families and friends at the monthly Board of Aldermen meeting for the official unveiling of the City of Flowood flag.

This flag symbolizes Flowood’s natural beauty, steady growth, and community spirit:

  • The dogwood flower, anchored at the center, represents the city’s character and heritage as well as its Four Corners retail district, often referred to locally as “Dogwood.”
  • Green reflects growth and progress.
  • Blue represents loyalty, pride, and the surrounding waters, including the Ross Barnett Reservoir and Pearl River.
  • White signifies renewal and new beginnings.
  • A gold dividing line represents Lakeland Drive, a defining corridor of the city.

The flowing design elements reflect the spirit of Flowood itself — ever growing, connected, and in motion.

This flag stands as a lasting emblem of Flowood’s past, present, and future, and of the shared pride of its people.

Congratulations to Rodgers Brown and Ms. Mandy Brownlee for bringing this historic moment to Flowood.
